Sailing Portishead to Plymouth

16th March 2020 - Our yacht lifted out of the water and pressure washed. She is now spik and span below, and anodes still good to go. A few jobs to finish onboard, and keeping eye on weather window for end of March...more updates to follow soon

22nd March - All ship shape ready for setting off monday morning before the sun rises. We will not miss the 14m tidal range in the Bristol Channel.

23rd March - Locked out at 5am, Leaving Portishead behind at sunrise

23rd March - This "self isolation" lark, is just perfect, just got to worry about 2nd skipper, but it is a 10m boat.. .

23rd March - Coombe Martins version of Ayers Rock.

23rd March - Sailing off into the sunset .

24th March - After a night sail, passing Lundy Island, arriving at Padstow harbour, greeted by beautiful sunrise, and pods of Porpoise, though too quick to get on camera .

24th March - Padstow in lockdown, so harbour master advised us to moor up on the RNLI bouy .

24th March - Lovely morning in Padstow, and just look at the water, it's Blue, not brown,,, .

27th March - Still in Padstow, we were swinging on a river mooring, enjoying the sun, sea, and views of sandy beaches, isolating ourselves as gov instructed. Needed shore power last night(Thu) so we are now in Padstow outer harbour, where the fishing boats are, which drys out at low water (twice a day) leaving us onboard leaning on the harbour wall. Its been a good experience for us, and we are enjoying this lifestyle.

28th March - popped to Padstow spar to get essentials, and seen our yacht glistening in the sun, whilst settled in the mud, awaiting the tide to come in. All looks ship shape. Tide is moderate 6.8M here.

2nd April - Still enjoying Padstow. Our yacht is covered with real sand, esp after the strong winds at the weekend. Getting used to sleeping at 10degrees list whilst tide out at night. Climbing the harbourside ladder at low water gives us birds eye view of our yacht. Lots of seagulls, terns, cormorants and turnstones around. Marked a whelk shell on harbour wall, below waterline, next night it moved about 3', then to our amazement, the following night it returned to exactly the same spot and same orientation! Incredible!!. ..Plenty of time for sailing once we get to Plymouth, our passage legs are quite long and we have to get to our destinations by sunset.

3rd April - Left Padstow for St Ives. Lots of dolphins appeared, to see us on our way, we actually saw their faces. Sea a bit choppy at times, and strong gusts of wind. Arrived St Ives, located a mooring bouy, and all tied up by sunset. Motored all the way. At St Ives we found we had a mackeral on forward deck, no idea where it came from.

4th April - left St Ives, on our passage to get around Lands End. Greeted by a seal, hard to spot, only the head shows. Motored all the way, encountered heavy seas, and winds up to 34knts gusts. Not to mention getting showered by the waves. Always a pleasure to see the headland where our night refuge is, though at sea it seems to take ages to arrive. We anchored in the small stunning Mullion Cove, and set chartplotter for anchor drag & depth alarm. We were anchored up as the sun was setting.

5th April - Enjoying Mullion Cove, drying out in the sun. Too windy to venture out today. It sure is a lifestyle we are enjoying.

6th April - After a rough night, last night, in the cove, and having to move our anchor twice during the night as the heavy seas were dragging it, we were ready at sunrise to set off, for the better weather forecast. Lovely day with calm seas and light winds. We headed for Falmouth as fuel getting low, only to find a complete lockdown and no fuel at all. Next headed to Fowey where they had 24/7 self service fuel..perfect. Topped up and spent the night on visitors pontoon in the river. A sight to see Fowey deserted..

7th April - It was nice to awake in Fowey, only the river ferry running. Headed off today for Plymouth. Tides in the area are not strong, and despite an easterly wind, we made Plymouth in five hours, and soon found our snug berth in the marina. We are both very, very happy having successfully completed the passage Portishead to Plymouth. It was very challenging and ourselves and EMERALD.H.D rode the waves and accomplished the passage, just over 300 nautical miles. We look forward now to exploring the area on EMERALD.H.D In the mean time now until the lockdown is lifted there is lots of jobs onboard cleaning and tidying up EMERALD.H.D. Stay safe everyone..
